The red light cameras violate the right of the accused to face his accusers. They are a shakedown tool, pure and simple, designed first, middle, and last to take money from people. The city of Dallas removed any and all doubt about this when they removed red light cameras that were effective in inducing compliance, because they were NOT MAKING ENOUGH MONEY. Municipalities have been caught time and time again shortening yellow times, which directly ENDANGERS people, just so that they can relabel safe driving as unlawful, to take money.
Anyone who believes for one second that such devices are there for any purpose other than transferring money from drivers to the companies that operate the cameras is simply mistaken. People who really do RUN red lights, and endanger others, shouldn't even be fined, they should be removed from the road, but that isn't how law enforcement rolls. They are in the business of deliberately and immediately returning dangerous drivers to the road, because they are the best money makers.
